Introduction
The Morship Game is a classic Christian board game loved by people of all ages. But if you’ve never played before, you might need some help with the rules. Maybe you’re even a seasoned player and you simply need a quick refresher on the rules, we’re here to help! In this article, we’ll show you how to set up the game, play by the official rules, and end the game.
Things You Should Know
Morship is made for 2-6 players, however, the sweet number of players lies somewhere between 3-5 players. The goal of the game is to earn enough points to enter the inner chamber and then into HOME.
Select one player to be the scorekeeper. The scorekeeper will keep the scores of all the points earned by the players as they play.
When you land on a tile, you are to perform the activity indicated on the tile to get the points associated with the tile.
Gameplay ends when only one player remains.
Setup the Morship Game
- Find 2-6 players for your game.
- The number of players matters because the more players, the more fun and lively the game will be, however, if the players are too many, then the game may take a really long time to finish. Finding the right number of players is crucial for the experience you seek to create.
- Nominate a player to be the scorekeeper
- The scorekeeper is in charge of recording the points earned by each player as they move around the board. The players can ask the scorekeeper for their total score at any point in the game.
- You could also decide that each player would keep count of their scores but this should be avoided as it could easily lead to manipulation of scores by some players. Just to be fair, it’s better to have a scorekeeper.
- Unfold the board and set out the Flaming and Word Cards on either side of the board.
- At this point, you may notice that your board is not perfectly flat on the table due to the folds of the board. Try to straighten it out so as to have a better playing surface.
- Allow each player to select a token to represent them.
- The tokens are all similarly shaped and only differentiated by their colour. Each player should note the colour of their token. In the case that more players are available than the number of tokens, any small object could be used to represent a player
- Take turns to roll the dice, the player with the highest roll goes first.
- Play continues clockwise around the table.
Know The Tiles
Before we go o to understand the gameplay, we should take some time to understand what each tile symbol means.
All players start here. This tile has no points and if you land on it subsequently, it also has no activity attached to it.
This is the Prayer Tile. When you land on this tile, you get 30 points by saying a word of prayer for everyone playing. Note that the points are written on the tile.
This is the Flaming Card Tile. When you land on this tile, you can get a maximum of 70 points. Another player would pick up a flaming card for you and read the instructions to you. Usually, the cards will ask you to: Complete a bible text (40 points) and then guess where it is in scripture (Book – 10 points, Chapter – 10 points, Verse – 10 points)
This is the theme song tile. When you land on this tile, you must sing an existing song related to a given theme. The theme will be given to you by the player after you. After singing the song successfully, you get 30 points. The text in the bottom right corner – T(a) – means, T (theme), a (player after you).
This is the word song tile. When you land on this tile, you have to sing an existing song that has a given word in it. The word will be given to you by the player before you. After singing the song successfully, you get 30 points. The text in the bottom right corner – W(b) – means, W (word), b (player before you).
This is the Word Card Tile. When you land on this tile, you can get a maximum of 50 points. Another player would pick up a word card for you from the top of the deck and read the instructions to you. Usually, the cards will ask you to: Guess who said it (30 points) and then describe the context (20 points)
This is the testimony tile. When you land on this tile, you must share a testimony you have not previously shared in this game session. Once you do so, you get 30 points
This is the prayer point tile. When you land on this tile, you have to share a prayer point you have not previously shared in this game session and each player has to say a word of prayer for you concerning it. Once they do so, you get 30 points and they each get 10 points
This is the “compose a song” tile. When you land on this tile, you must compose a song related to a given theme. The theme will be given to you by the player before you. After composing and singing the song successfully, you get 30 points. The text in the bottom right corner – T(b) – means, T (theme), b (player before you).
These are corner tiles. They can keep you stagnant for a maximum of three turns if you are unable to carry out their activity. When you land on any of these tiles, you have to say a scripture that has the word or sing a song that has the word in it. If you’re unable to do this, you lose your next turn.
Gameplay
- If you want to play a timed game, then set your timer to the number of minutes, hours (or maybe even days) that you want the game to last for.
- All player tokens are placed on the START tile and the first player rolls the dice and moves their game piece.
- On each turn, the active player rolls the dice and moves their game piece the same number of spaces indicated on the dice.
- You have to do the activity specified by the tile to get the points. Then the next player plays next.
Inner Chamber
When you have enough points, you can enter the inner chamber through its entrance.
- After players enter the inner chamber, they can choose to either take the right or the left path. If they have enough points to enter HOME, they may do so, but if not, they are to exit by the arrows next to the HOME tile and rejoin the game.
- In the inner chamber, you get double the points you would have normally gotten outside the inner chamber. For instance, let’s say you were meant to share a testimony and get 30 points, you would get double (60 points) because you are inside the inner chamber. However, if a player is unable to do the specified activity of the tile while inside the inner chamber, the normal points of the tile would be deducted from their total score. So, for instance, a player already has 400 points, she then lands on the Flaming Tile, but if she is unable to complete the activity specified by the card, she would lose 50 points and her total score would become 350 points.
- NOTE: Players may choose not to enter the inner chamber even when they have enough points to do so. They may sometimes choose to do this to get enough points to enter HOME in their first entry into the inner chamber.
Ending the Morship Game
The standard game can end in two ways:
- When every player enters HOME; or
- When the time is up.
When the game ends with every player entering HOME, the player positions are in the order of when they enter HOME. When a game ends when the time allotted by the players is up, then the player with the largest number of points wins. If two or more players tie by the number of points they have, a tiebreaker is done with a Card Play.
Morship Card Play
Follow the steps below to play with just the cards
- Select the deck (Flaming Card deck or Word Card Deck)
- Shuffle the selected deck thoroughly.
- Place the deck of cards at the centre of the board. Choose the number of rounds (the number of rounds should be odd)
- Play the rounds and record the scores for each player.
- NOTE: A round is played by another player picking up the card for you to ask you the question on the card which you must answer. The turns for the Card Play are selected according to the normal rules on how the player turns are chosen. Scores are recorded in the normal way that scores are recorded for a full game. A round is complete when all the players have had a turn. When it is a player’s turn, another player will pick up the card for that player and instruct the player on what the card says to do to get the points.
- The best player at the end of the rounds wins.
